Natural Sponges

Natural Sponges

The natural sponge is neither a coral nor a plant but has been described as an animal that has neither a brain nor a central nervous system.

The natural sponge is neither a coral nor a plant but has been described as an animal that has neither a brain nor a central nervous system. Sponges live on the ocean floor, stuck in a permanent and fixed position and do not move.
Sponges have a dark color underwater, this is due to the black membrane that covers the sponge which acts like skin and protects its internal soft skeleton.

Are natural sponges better than synthetic ones? An artificial sponge is an industrial oil product. Natural sponges are more resistant to abrasion, are softer (as they are particularly hydrophilic), absorb water many times their volume without excreting it, are self-cleaning (through the complex communicating channels of which they are composed), do not stain or retain odors, do not cause allergies and in no way can they damage the skin of the one who uses it. By using a natural sponge, the pores of the skin open and allow the skin to breathe better and blood circulation is facilitated.

It is logical that even a natural sponge, if left in stagnant water, will not only wear out quickly but will also develop microorganisms, unfriendly to the skin. After each use, rinse it well with lukewarm water and keep it in a ventilated environment. To extend its life, soak it in water with baking soda for 15 minutes every few weeks for a deep clean. Most importantly, know its “use by” date. If it smells bad or has discolored, throw it away. And don’t feel bad – natural products break down and return to the earth.
